What is Amla
This month, we are diving into Indian Gooseberry, aka Amalaki or Amla, a rejuvenating herbal adaptogen that has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. The Indian Gooseberry tree is grown in India and bears small sour fruits, which inspired the name amla, which directly translates to "sour" in Hindi. The tree is considered sacred in India, and Amla is not something commonly come across here in the states.
Benefits of Amla
Amla is a profoundly rejuvenating herb with a high concentration of antioxidants and vitamin C. Amla is known to be incredibly healing for both the body and mind. Here are some ways that Amalaki can benefit you.
- Strengthens immune system: Amalaki supports robust health all around due to its nourishing qualities. It cultivates youthfulness, bolsters a healthy immune system, and promotes overall well-being.
- Enhances digestive health: Amalaki is known to activate and support digestion through its sour taste. It helps the body easily digest, absorb, and assimilate nutrients.
- Promotes proper elimination: Amalaki supports natural detoxification in the GI tract and throughout the body because of its high concentration of antioxidants and its cleansing qualities. It also soothes, tones, and rejuvenates the bowels, supporting a healthy and regular elimination of toxins.
- Calms the mind and emotions: Amalaki supports a clear mind and enhances memory. In addition, it has a sattvic nature that fosters subtle awareness, balances emotions, and provides a sense of calm and peace within the mind.
Taking Amalaki
Amalaki can be consumed in various forms. You can mix Amalaki powder with hot water to drink as a tea or take it in capsule form to easily incorporate it into your supplement regime. Amalaki is also one of three herbs in the traditional Ayurvedic blend, Triphala. Triphala is a powerful and cleansing digestive tonic consisting of Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. It is highly beneficial and is typically consumed in capsule form.
Amla can also be used for topical treatments. It's incredible for skin, hair, and nail health. Hair oils with Amalaki nourish the scalp, minimize hair loss, and boost hair growth. In addition, tooth powders with Amalaki can help clean and strengthen teeth. To enjoy the effects of Amalaki for your entire body, opt to consume it in tea or powder form.
Contraindications and Final Thoughts
Ama is overall very safe but should be avoided in cases of significant Kapha imbalance. For those who are pregnant or nursing, consult with your Ayurvedic Practioner or a medical professional. When trying out a new herb, it is recommended to work with an Ayurvedic practitioner and listen to your body as you incorporate it slowly but surely.
